How Innocent Sita Got Fooled

The myth and the modern tactic...

Sita was kidnapped by Ravana through a cunning plan. Ravana's brother Maricha transformed into a golden deer to lure Rama away from their hermitage. Enchanted by the deer, Sita asked Rama to capture it. Rama went after the deer, leaving Lakshmana to guard Sita.

When Rama was far away, Maricha, wounded by Rama's arrow, cried out in Rama's voice for help. Sita, worried, urged Lakshmana to go assist Rama. Lakshmana hesitated but finally left after drawing a protective boundary called the Lakshman Rekha around the hermitage, instructing Sita not to cross it.

Ravana then approached disguised as a poor sage asking for alms. Sita, stepping outside the protective boundary to give him food, was immediately seized by Ravana, who revealed his true form and abducted her in his flying chariot, the Pushpaka Vimana. On the way, the vulture Jatayu tried to rescue her but was wounded by Ravana.

This abduction set the stage for Rama's quest to rescue Sita, leading to the epic battle in Lanka.
